Chang'e Flying to the Moon
One of the most popular Chinese legends is the story of Chang'e the goddess of the moon who flew to the moon with a magical elixir. According to the legend Chang'e was married to Hou Yi an expert archer who saved the world by shooting down nine of ten suns that had appeared in the sky. As a reward for his heroism Hou Yi was given an elixir of immortality but he didn't want to become immortal without his beloved wife Chang'e. However Chang'e accidentally drank the entire elixir and flew to the moon where she has been living ever since.

In ancient Chinese mythology there is a beautiful story about a goddess named Chang'e. It is said that Chang'e lived in the magnificent palace of the moon with her husband Houyi the archer. One day ten suns appeared in the sky scorching the earth and causing great suffering for the people. Houyi being a skilled archer shot down nine of the suns saving humanity from their fiery wrath. The grateful people rewarded him with the elixir of immortality.
Houyi cherished the elixir but he was also worried about its power falling into the wrong hands. He decided to hide it in their home and protect it until the right time came. However a jealous apprentice named Feng Meng discovered the secret and tried to steal the elixir. Knowing the danger Chang'e decided to drink it herself to prevent Feng Meng from obtaining it.
As soon as Chang'e swallowed the elixir her body became weightless and she flew towards the moon. In her haste she dropped her jade rabbit which became her companion on the moon. Chang'e was now the immortal Moon Goddess who ruled over the moon.
Chang'e's story is often associated with the Mid-Autumn Festival a traditional Chinese holiday. On this day people gather with their families and friends to celebrate and admire the beauty of the moon. They also eat mooncakes a special pastry representing Chang'e's smile and burn incense to pay tribute to the goddess.
